Old wood decks at lake cabins take a beating. Freeze and thaw cycles, moisture from the ground, and years of foot traffic all add up fast. By the time a deck gets to the point of visibly rotting boards and peeling paint, it's past its prime - and honestly, it becomes a safety issue too.

Here's what we were working with: a small rotted wood deck right at the cabin entry, paired with an aging concrete walkway that had seen better days. The whole setup just wasn't doing the homeowner any favors. So we tore out the old deck and poured a brand new concrete porch in its place, then tied it into a fresh sidewalk that runs the length of the building toward the lake.

Concrete is the right call in situations like this. Wood demands ongoing maintenance - staining, sealing, replacing boards. Concrete? You pour it once and it handles whatever Wisconsin winters throw at it. For a lakefront property that deals with heavy moisture and fluctuating temps, that durability matters a lot.

The finished porch has a clean, curved edge where it meets the sidewalk, which gives the whole entry a more intentional, polished look. It also just works better - solid footing right outside the door, a clear path from the cabin to the rest of the property. Simple upgrades like this make a real difference in day-to-day use, especially at a place you want to enjoy without maintenance headaches hanging over you.

We squeeze in pours when the weather cooperates, and this one came together right at the tail end of the season near Solon Springs. If you've got a rotted deck, crumbling entry, or old walkway that needs attention, concrete is worth a serious look.
